Spend ten minutes in any college fantasy community and you'll hit three acronyms with no explanation: CFF, devy, and C2C. They describe genuinely different games, and picking the wrong one is the most common way a newcomer ends up in a league they don't enjoy. Here's the distinction in plain terms.
CFF — College Fantasy Football
You draft real college players and they score points for you right now, from this Saturday's games. A season starts in August and ends with a championship in December. When a player graduates or turns pro, he simply leaves your pool next year.
This is the most direct analogue to NFL fantasy, and it's what most people mean when they say "college fantasy football." If you're new, this is almost certainly what you want.
Devy — short for "developmental"
Devy is not really a college game at all — it's an NFL dynasty format with a college wrinkle. You play in a long-running NFL league, and alongside your NFL roster you stash college players years before they're draft-eligible. Those players score you nothing while they're in college. The entire payoff is that when your stashed sophomore becomes a first-round NFL pick three years later, you already own him.
Devy rewards scouting and patience. It's a poor fit if you want points on Saturday, and an excellent fit if you already play NFL dynasty and enjoy prospect evaluation.
C2C — Campus to Canton
C2C is the hybrid, and it's the most demanding of the three. You manage two rosters at once: a college team that scores on Saturdays, and an NFL team that scores on Sundays. When a college player you own gets drafted into the NFL, he "graduates" — moving from your college roster to your pro roster, still yours.
It's the most complete version of the idea, and the reason it has the most invested commissioners: it also demands the most administration. C2C leagues typically need written bylaws covering graduation rules, rookie drafts and roster limits.
Which should you start with?
- You want to play this Saturday → CFF.
- You already play NFL dynasty and like scouting → devy.
- You want the full thing and don't mind the bookkeeping → C2C.
- You're unsure → CFF. It's the easiest to leave and the easiest to learn, and every concept transfers upward if you later want devy or C2C.
The rest of the vocabulary
- Orphan — a team abandoned mid-season by its manager, offered to a replacement. Taking an orphan is a common, low-cost way into an established league.
- Graduation — in C2C, a college player moving to your NFL roster after being drafted.
- Big board — a ranked list of every eligible player, used to prepare for a draft.
- Transfer portal — the system by which college players change schools between seasons. It reshuffles player value every offseason and has no NFL equivalent.
- Conference-only league — a league whose player pool is restricted to one conference. A popular college-specific format with no NFL analogue.
- IDP — Individual Defensive Players; leagues where defenders are rostered individually rather than as a team defense.
